Empu Tantular saat menulis Kakawin Sutasoma ternyata lebih suka memakai makna tersirat di balik yang tersurat. Itulah sebabnya kenapa kita musti jeli dalam memahami. "Kakawin" berarti karya pujangga yang berbahasa Kawi (Jawa Kuno), "Suta" artinya anak dan "Soma" sinonim dengan bulan. Kakawin Sutasoma ialah hikayat ia yang bertabiat laksana rembulan nan lembut dan melembutkan.

Kalau beberapa waktu lalu di Barat pernah dihebohkan oleh Da Vinci Code, kini di Timur ada juga "Sutasoma Code".
